A few days back, my client asked me: “Simon, what are the 3 simplest ways to improve the effectiveness of my emails and copywriting? I don’t wanna get a training—just give me the 3 most effective methods.”
You know what happens when a question like this comes up. It’s never easy to answer it directly. Nevertheless, I thought for a while and came up with the right answer.
Of course—it’s not that simple. The answer to “how to do something more effectively” hides many answers and variables. In business or sport; the rule is the same.
However, that question inspired me to write this post.
It’ll be succinct and straight to the point. I hope it helps you too.
1/ Write Shorter Sentences
3 Simple Tips that Boost Your Email & Copy Outcome
— Simon Gorlak (@simongorlak) September 5, 2024
Why your emails and copywriting don’t sell?
You try anything; trainings, watching videos on YT, reading books. Emails and copy that you write simply don’t make an outcome. What’s wrong?
In many cases, we bark at the wrong…
One of the best pieces of advice.
How many times have you read a sentence that could’ve been an email? This is the key point.
In many cases, we see sentences that are too long. What does that mean?
Overly long sentences introduce too many ideas. They start multiple thoughts. As a result, your prospect (or client) doesn’t know what to do. ‘Should I respond? Perhaps I should buy? Maybe he’s waiting for my call? Damn, I won’t ask him because I’ll look like a dumby. Forget it, maybe next time.’
Client 1–0 Sales rep.
This is what happens when your sentences are too long.
Limit your sentences to 6–10 words. Shorter sentences better engage prospects with your message.
Of course, your sentences can be slightly longer or shorter. It all depends on the context.
—> So, are you in?
Takes only 4 words.
—> If you decide today, we will run your marketing campaign without a commission.
This one has taken 13 words.
Both sentences are adequate and convey a clear message. Sometimes you need to write a longer sentence to express all your thoughts. Sometimes even 4 words are enough to achieve the desired effect.
A simple, but very powerful change.
2/ Be Straightforward
So where are you getting at?
I guess this could be the common question your prospect wants to ask you.
Don’t beat around the bush; communicate your intention.
Want to sell something? Say it.
Want to ask a prospect to attend an event? Don’t hesitate to do so.
Maybe you want to invite your client to follow your newsletter? Ask it. Apart from a verbal ‘no’, there’s nothing that can surprise you.
Speak your mind and be straightforward with your message.
P.S. There’s a fine line between being straightforward and being pushy or intrusive. A subtle difference that can turn a prospect into your enemy. Be vigilant.
3/ Use Simple & More Common Words
How many times you’ve seen words that look bizarre?
Even so, it isn’t the only case.
Let me show you an example.
—> What preliminary actions might I undertake to initiate collaborative engagement with you?
The heck?
—> What can I do to get started working with you?
Which one sounds better? Self-evident question.
It’s not about using language like a peasant. The client needs to feel like they’re speaking with an expert. I couldn’t disagree. However, in many cases, we use words that are unnecessary. They distract the client. Due to poor communication, they don’t know what to do. And what do they finally do? Nothing. Puts your email aside and never gets back to it.
sophisticated & wordy < easy & concise
Don’t complicate simple things.
Write as you speak, it always pays off.
Concise & straightforward—as promised.
These are 3 simple tips that boost Your Email Marketing & Copywriting outcome.
What are your best tips?
